Music memories shared with millions

It’s amazing how things from the past are suddenly back in vogue and hugely topical.

For me this week it has been my memories and contact with pop superstars Depeche Mode back in the early 80s.

The band launched a competition for fans from around the world to run their Facebook page and I was quick to apply.

I’ve always been a huge fan of the band and, clearing through some old paperwork, found an amazing piece of band history together with Christmas cards from the band, letters from them and even thank you notes after sending them birthday cards!

Perfect I hoped for the band and their Facebook team to pick me from applicants of all ages from around the world.

The group has more than seven million Facebook fans globally so I knew that I had to put a good case for my turn.

And this week I’m thrilled and honoured to have been chosen as guest editor of the band’s Facebook page and share my great memories with so many people.

The amazing piece of memorabilia which secured my spot was a questionnaire I sent the band back in 1982.

They were still relatively new on the scene and I wanted to know everything I could about them. I did ask quite an eclectic mix of questions at the time and it’s a brilliant snapshot into life in the early 80s.

The answers revealed everything from lead singer Dave Gahan loving the Benny Hill Show through to Martin Gore being a big fan of futuristic clothing and Andy Fletcher being a good ice skater. The question was asked as I was a regular skater at the ice rink in Southampton at the time.

Music also played a large part in the questions with the late David Bowie proving a favourite with the band together with Simple Minds, Kraftwerk and Tears for Fears.

The whole fan takeover is a brilliant idea and I’m thrilled to have been chosen to take part.

I’ve always been a big music fan and social media has become such a great way for people around the world to share music and memories.

To be effectively broadcasting to more than seven million people around the world is a great honour.
