The organisers of TEDxSouthampton have announced the main sponsors as momentum builds for the famous TEDTalks coming to the south coast.
With the theme of Human to Human Connection – embracing innovation, being connected and personal potential – the all-day live event will feature 12 outstanding speakers. It will be held at the Southampton Harbour Hotel on Tuesday October 12 and tickets, which will be limited to around 100, will be released soon.
Lee Peck, the License Holder and Co-Curator of TEDxSouthampton, said: “Today we are delighted to announce our sponsors.
“Lead sponsor is Aura Technology, which delivers proactive IT services for businesses. Performance sponsor is Southampton’s world class Mayflower Theatre, the fourth largest in the UK . Legal sponsor is major law firm BDB Pitmans with offices in London, Cambridge, Reading and Southampton.
The venue sponsor is the award-winning Southampton Harbour Hotel, the city’s only five-star hotel. All our sponsors’ support is invaluable, and I’d like to take this opportunity to thank them each personally.”
Lee continued: “The response to holding a TEDx event in our city has been fantastic. The local business community as well as individuals are keen to collaborate, drive this event forward and give the city another reason to stand out.”
The “X” denotes that the event is independently organised so, having submitted their ideas and experience, the TED organisation allows the local team to deliver an event with their blessing.
TEDxSouthampton Co-curator Annelies James said: “Featuring 12 hand-picked speakers and performers, the event will seek to inspire and create discussion around all elements of our theme: Human to Human Connection. I think it’s fair to say the topics have never been more relevant as the pandemic engulfed the world. We’ll be asking some important questions like ‘how can we embrace our personal capital and be more vulnerable, showcasing our human side?’, ‘How can we challenge ourselves, overcome adversity and champion our own growth and potential?’ and ‘How can we recognise and tap into the greatness that comes from being human?’.
Tim Walker, Managing Director of Aura Technology said: “I’m a big admirer of TED Talks and to be involved with a local event organised by local people is very attractive to us. Our company offers IT solutions that are directly aligned with the goals of the businesses we work with, and we could not achieve this without strong collaboration and interaction between people so that we thrive on new ideas and innovation – areas where TED has proved to be a world leader.”
Michael Ockwell, the CEO of Mayflower Theatre has been fundamental in getting the TEDxSouthampton event off the ground. He said: “From the outset I was delighted to be on the judging panel when, at Mayflower Theatre, we auditioned 34 people – distilled from almost 100 applicants – for the 12 speaker slots on the day. I promise you the standard was outstanding. We’re also really pleased to be streaming the event live from MAST in the City’s Culture Quarter”.
As legal sponsor leading law firm BDB Pitmans is committed to helping shape what’s important to people and society. Southampton partner Emily Taylor said: “The ethos of the TED Talks is something we share with our team and clients on a day-to-day basis. We also try to look at the bigger picture and being part of TEDxSouthampton helps us to join the debate in what helps our community to thrive.”
Originally planned for 2020, TEDxSouthampton was postponed ensuring that the event would be run live. Debbie Parsons-Randle, Sales Director at Southampton Harbour Hotel, said: “For me, the TEDx event is all about the audience and that real and spontaneous interaction. Over the years our venue has hosted some outstanding events and to be adding a TEDx event to that list is a real thrill.”
Lee Peck added: “As we’ve demonstrated with our support so far, the event will be a superb vehicle for sponsors too so if there are any more interested parties then please get in touch with me. We can put packages together for all budgets.”
He concluded: “More than anything we’re thrilled to be staging this unique event to create some positivity as the country emerges from the pandemic. Southampton is a great city and deserves to be showcased and the talent put onto an international stage. TEDx is an incredible platform and I feel this would give people an opportunity to make their mark, give back and foster a really positive outcome for themselves, the attendees and the wider audience.”
