City marathon breaks all records

Attracting a record breaking field of nearly 10,000 runners and an estimated 30,000 supporters to Southampton’s big marathon day was no mean feat. But that’s just what Lee Peck Media did working for Rees Leisure, the organisers of the 2017 ABP Southampton Marathon, Half Marathon and 10k.

It was the city’s first full marathon in more than 30 years as it joined the ABP Half Marathon and 10k which were in their third successive year.

Lee Peck Media delivered the communications strategy and ran the press office on the day ensuring coverage in all channels: print, radio and television. Our senior account manager Laura Downton also managed to deliver a personal best running in the 10k!

Commercially too, the day was a huge success with the event boosting the city’s economy by more than £1m and raising £500,000 for charity.

Race director Chris Rees said: “We have worked with the team at Lee Peck Media for three years now and their enthusiasm and expertise surpasses my expectations time and time again. Their attention to detail and ability to engage with the media is incredible. The coverage this year was the best yet and played a crucial role in attracting a record entry.”
